after care for Scrotal Ablation

Question
I have a 2 1/2 year old golden retriever that I just had neutered.  He developed an infection after the initial procedure.  I took him back the the vet I had it done by and he preformed a scrotal ablation.  Is there any additional after care I should be doing other than an Elizabethan collar?  The sutures that were used are dissolvable.  Should I be doing or using anything to keep the area clean?  I do not want another infection in the area.

Answer
Hi Terri-

No, just keep him as quiet as possible and keep that E-collar on. Watch for any swelling, heat, leakage or pain in the area, similar to the previous infection you dealt with. Did your vet give him antibiotics to help?

You do not have to keep the area clean, just try to keep it as dry as possible, and keep him as quiet as possible. It will heal much faster on its own versus being gunked up, HOWEVER if you notice any swelling a little antibiotic ointment can help- I never recomend this as a precautionary medicine as it can make the dogs less likely to respond to it, but keep it on hand just in case.

Hope he feels better! Thanks for neutering.
