Jumping Dog

Question
Hello,
My dog is about 9 1/2 months old. He is a mix. Of what breeds I am not sure. Most think he has some border collie in him because he is black and white, has long hair and resembles a border collie in temperament. But I don't know for sure. Anyway, when I come home from being away for any amount of time and let him out of his kennel, he jumps on me constantly. I know he's showing that he's happy to see me, but I would prefer he do that without the jumping part. What can I do to stop the jumping? I've read books and don't research online and have tried some of the suggestions but they just don't seem to work. Help me please.
Thank you!

Answer
Consistently is very important in correcting jumping and other problems.  Quickly correcting him each and every time he jumps on somebody is very important.  Something bad has to happen each time.  People are successful with a number of different things.  One of the most gentle is to grab his front paws and hold him up.  The traditional knee to the chest or step on his paws work well too.  In each case apply ''Bad dog, its name off!'' in a firm, but not loud voice.  Go ahead with it even if he is too quick to add a physical correction.

We were at a training seminar last fall.  The presenter demonstrated stepping backwards whne the dog jumped up.  It seemed to work well, but if your dog is used to any positive response ever from you, it will take a long time for anything to work.
