Question
the male is younger, a little bit bigger and, doesn't seem like he can get in a position to where he can stay up. he's a virgin. does he know what he's doing? will he eventually get it? it's been 12 hours, many attempts, and no success. what do i do?

Answer

Hi Abby,

You could be right, the male dog, because of his age,  may not know what he's doing.

Put the female on a lead and let her "straddle" your lap so she is sideways from you.  Have someone bring the male around to the business end and encourage him to mount. Once he mounts and starts thrusting, help by cupping his penis and guide into the female. You can read more about how to help your dogs to mate, here:

Breeding dogs should not be used too many times in one day, their fertility will decrease and they will probably be tired after a union of 20 minutes. Let the dogs attempt to mate for as long as the female will stand for the male. On average the optimal breeding time is ten to fourteen days after the first sign blood. Once her heat cycle progresses, she won't stand for the male any longer.  The actual act of breeding can take anywhere from ten to forty-five minutes.

Best of luck,
Patti
