Bruising after grooming/clipping

Question
Rufus was "lion-clipped" today. His fur is close to Australia Shephard in thickness.
He is acting very sore, hesitant to walk, licking his abdomen a lot, & I now notice huge dark bruises on either side of his penis.
What can I do besides putting anti-itch salve on the area and soft ice packs?

Ciao, Shadow

Answer
Hi Shadow,

Does it look as though your dog's recent clipping just was a little too close in spots, leaving your dog with razor burn?

"Huge dark bruises on either side of his penis" does not sound consistent with a close haircut. Is it possible that your dog had this condition going on before the haircut, and it's only now that you're seeing the bruised skin.

Try using either 100% pure Aloe Vera gel on the irritated skin. Pure Aloe Vera is safe if your dog licks it off, and it will soothe the skin. Dabbing Witch Hazel on the sore skin will also help it feel better. Both Aloe and Witch Hazel can be applied as often as every two hours, and can be found in most drug stores.

If your dog continues to act sore, and hesitates to walk  for more than 48 hours or begins to act lethargic, you should take him to a vet.

I hope I've been a help.

Best of luck,
Patti
