9 month old Black Lab, urination

Question
Hi,
We just adopted a 9 month old Black Lab, female, spayed.  She is a wonderful, mild, well manned dog.  Her previous owners had to get rid of her because their son had allergies.  The dog had been outside or in the garage for the past few months, due to these allergies.  WE have had her for two weeks.  We will take her out, she will urinate, we bring her in the house and if someone pays attention to her, she will urinate on the floor.  The previous owners had told us that sometimes when excited, she pees.  I have a three year old daughter and two teenagers with lots of people in and out and we seem to be picking up pee all the time.  She never makes any suggestion to go outside when she has to go. She is crate trained and in the morning when we go get her to let her out, she is so excited to see us, she pees all over the crate and all the way outside.  We could use any helpful suggestions.
Thanks
Colleen

Answer
Colleen, the most important thing is that you must NOT scold her or make a big deal of it when she pees out of excitement. Fussing at her for it will only make the problem worse. Just clean it up and go on about your business. Whenever you go to let her out of the crate in the mornings, don't make eye contact with her, don't say anything to her, and don't love all over her when you do let her out. Just walk over, open the crate door, clip the leash to her collar, and take her out. Then, after she does her business outside, you can pet her and tell her what a good girl she is, etc. Do the same thing whenever you come home, and tell visitors to ignore her as well when they first arrive. Whenever she has calmed down and 'given up' trying to get attention, she can be (calmly) called over and petted.

This is a normal puppy thing, and she should grow out of it.
