Question
I have a dog that is a mix, believe poodle and some kind of terrier. We believe it is an older dog. We have only had the dog for about 10 months. Then we got another dog which is 3years old and a Jack Russell. These dogs do not get along. The Jack Russell is a growler and a nipper and very possessive. The other dog has always been quiet with the usual barking. They bark and attacked constantly. Sometimes getting into full blown fights. Now the one that used to bark, barks all the times and has become aggressive. I have used the crate for bad behavior. Is there any way to get these two to get along. They are both great dogs alone

Answer
Hi Vivienne,

You didn't tell me the gender of your dogs, or whether or not they are either spayed or neutered. It's been my experience that having two female dogs is more problematic than  having two male dogs. Female dogs, like males, have an increased risk of aggression if left intact. Estrus can cause moodiness, and hormone changes in pregnancy can make some females downright aggressive.

So if your dogs are not spayed or neutered, getting them "fixed" would be a good start in correcting the problems.

Dog to dog aggression is not a simple fix, it would be difficult for me to describe all that needs to be done via the internet, plus I can't actually see how your dogs interact. I know how frustrated you must feel about this.
Your best bet to resolve this problem, if your other attempts haven't worked, is to contact a dog behaviorist. Your veterinarian can probably give you a referral, or you can contact a dog obedience school, they usually have experience with behavioral problems, such as the ones you're having.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
