Diet for Dog with Cancer

Question
Hello Cindi,
I have a Std Poodle who is 11 yrs old and has been losing weight for about 2 months now.  I tried to get weight back on him but couldn't, so I took him to the vet yesterday.  The vet said that he found masses in my dogs stomach and that they were probably cancerous.  He also said that liver and kidney failure was something to consider.
I need to know of a good diet that I can start my dog on to help put weight back on (if that is possible because the vet told me that my dog isn't processing the food he eats) and to combat the liver/kidney failure.

I am feeding Scout Iams puppy food with salmon, canned dog food, cream of chicken soup and cottage cheese on his dry food to encourage him to eat.  I am also starting to give him fish oil for the omega fatty acids in them.  I am also going to start adding spinach, carrots and eggs to his food.  I know that you have to watch a high protien diet with dogs with liver failure, but since my dog is also very skinny, I need to keep what weight on him that I can.  I would apprecieate any other suggestions or help that I can get to keep my older man going.
Thanks, Kim and Scout

Answer
I'm so sorry Kim. SP's are one of my all time favorite breeds.
You can do something about the liver and kidney failure in my opinion. It is WAY too much for me to include in one post but if you go to http://www.dogcancer.net/diet.html I think you will find all the necessary information regarding supplements diet etc. The fish oil is PERFECT, 1000 mgs per day per 20 pounds of body weight. Add sardines and make sure your are not just giving capsules. You can get cod liver oil as well and they will just DRINK it. If you must use capsules break them open he will lick them right up. You're on the right track. One thing I Would do differently is that I would stay away from commercially prepared dog food period of at all possible. Hit that website and you'll find a wealth of information.
Please keep me up to date on his progress.
