Male dog urinating on female dog

Question
QUESTION: Our 3 year old male French Brittany spaniel has begun urinating on our 6 year old female cocker spaniel.  This is a fairly new behavior and the dogs get along well otherwise.

ANSWER: If she hasn't been spayed yet, she will be producing more hormones as she matures possibly coming into season in another month.  He is giving other males notice she is his.  Such is more likely of an intact male.  It is in the best interests of them, you, and dogs in general to get them fixed now.

QUESTION: The male and the female are both fixed (when they were about 6 months old).  Any other ideas?

Answer
Thank you for being a responcible pet owner.  I still think he is claiming her.  Spay/neutering is highly effective in these cases.  She may still have residual hormones from before being spayed, plus confusing smells left from the surgury.  You can hope it will go away as things wear off.  I should have mentioned leadership in my original answer.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  For more on being top dog, see http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm  If you are firmly in place as top dog, then he has no claim on her.  The important thing is not obeying commands, but seeing you as the leader.
