When is best to have a female lab puppy fixed what age?

I have a 16 week old black lab puppy and a two part question should I have her fixed and if so at what age.

All but the very best dogs that are worth considering as breeding stock should be spay/neutered.  Yes get her spayed.  I would not argue with the vet that will be doing it about when.  I lean towards the common 6 months.  That assures you it is done before she starts into season the first time with all its hassles and dangers.  There are far worse things can happen to a female than an accidental breeding if they get loose when in season.  Many people are not prepared for the creative, strenuous attempts a female will make to get loose and go find a male.
