Adopting a Senior Chihuahua thats not neutered

Question
Hi Becky!  I hope you can give some guidance on this.  We have a 13 year old female chihuahua named Tiny who is the light of our lives.  The rescue folks we adopted her from told us that they couldn't tell if she had been spayed (she's 2 lbs, and my understanding was she was too small too tell).

We are considering adopting a male senior chi (11-13 years old) who has not been neutered. That said, the last thing I want is for my little girl to get pregnant.  She has not been in heat during the three years we've had her, but I understand that dogs can continue to get pregnant until the end of their lives. I definitely wouldn't want to put her through that.

Any thoughts?

Thank you so much for any assistance you can give.

Tina

Answer
Hi Tina,
She will swell and have a bloody discharge when in heat.  Chihuahuas don't bleed much, but she would be constantly licking herself. If you have had her three years, I think you would have noticed.  Sounds like she's been spayed to me!
Keep in mind that if you adopt a male that has not been neutered, chances are very good that he will hike his leg on your furniture.  He may be housebroken, but male dogs do this , ESPECIALLY if not neutered. At the age he is, even if you neuter him now, and you really should, he may still hike his leg.  Just thought you may want to be prepared for that.  There is a product that you can buy online called "belly band" just for that purpose and it will keep him from peeing on everything!

God Bless,
Becky
