Question
QUESTION: hi, i had a lhasa apso who is one month and 6 days old. He is not feeling well and has loose motion and i got his stool tested even though the vet tells me that it won't be necessary. There is no parasited but mucus is present. Is this serious? should i go to my vet again? he hasn't take any of his shots yet. And also i had a three and a half months old and two months old pekingese and both of them also haven't finished taking their shots. I tried keeping them apart in different room but its hopeless cos they will bark and yell. Is it ok for all of them to be together? Both my pekes are healthy.

ANSWER: Empee-

With no vaccine history I would be concerned with Parvo. When his stool was tested, did the vet do a parvo test?

We always recommend that dogs be kept seperate until all three of their vaccines are finished. The reason for this is because if one dog does come down with parvo or distemper, it will spread like a wildfire and affect all puppies and could take their lives.

Good luck, I hope he feels better.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you for the information. Toto ( the lhasa apso) is responding well to his medication. I went to vet again and he told me the mucus would be due to his changes in diet. He is very active now and progressing. But my two month old peke has fever and a nasal discharge. He is on treatment right now and is due for his third shot tomorrow. Doc advised me to keep him away from both the other peke and the lhasa. So i kept them in different rooms now and i hope this help. I am scared that my other 3 months old peke who is very healthy will get infected. Will Keeping them in seperate rooms will help?

Answer
I'm sorry! I didnt see your follow up. Yes, it will help, but make sure you wash hands between dogs and you do not allow anything that your sick dog touches to touch your healthy dogs. It sounds like he has bordetello. This is HIGHLY contagious, so to be perfectly honest, it will be very hard to not let your other dogs catch it.
