Question
Ive read your bio and will read your response in three days...My dog is afraid to go outside and potty. He had some stomach issues that led to a bath three times in two days and now I think he associates going potty with getting a bath.It has steadily gotten worse and now even refuses to go out first thing in the morning.I have to physically pick him up and take him out.I reward him every time he comes in with a cookie but anytime he sees me put my shoes on he runs under my bed. What can I do to make him feel better about going out?He is one of three dogs and its incredibly frustrating...help please!!!

Answer
Hi Susan,

Thank you for writing to me about your scared dog..so sorry about this.  You wrote that you reward him every time he comes in.  The reward has to be related to going out, as he has no problem with wanting to come in.  You can start desensitizing him by creating an association between putting on your shoes and a treat.  Additionally, when he is outside, give him a treat and praise.  Take him for a walk in a new area.  Keep praising him and give treats (very teeny pieces).  Put your shoes on in another room so he doesn't get anxious seeing you put them on.  Change your routine.  Take him out prior to eating so the treats are especially delicious and only use one treat for this desentization process..something quite yummy and special.

You can also try the anxiety shirt which is sold in some pet shops and also from amazon.  This reduces the level of aniety a dog is experiencing.

Be patient...something happened in that sweet munchkin's mind that has him terrified and it is going to take time and patience to rectify it.

If all else fails, you may have to work briefly with a behavorist.

Best of luck,
Shelley Davis
