Puppy crates

Question
I'm about to be a first-time dog owner, so this might not be the only time you
hear from me!
My question is this: Is it ok to get a previously used crate for our puppy?
Someone had told me that if it's got the scent of another dog in it, our puppy
might not  want to use it, and training it might be more difficult than if he had a
new crate. Is that true? Thanks for any advice you might have!

Answer
Hi Tony;
First, let me get this out of the way.
I DO NOT like crates.
Never used one and never will.
I make my dogs members of the family, and I don't belkieve what some say that they like thir crates.
I foster for several rescue groups, and none of the dogs that ever pass through there like them.
Dogs will become accustomed to them, after they see no amout of whining and begging is going to get them out of it, so they just resign themselves.
I train!!! They are taught the rules, that I am the alpha ( the mom) and they are just little peons.
They get all kinds of love, playing, affection and even sopoiling, but they mind!!!
I raise them just like I raised my children.
I am 72, and my dad, who was a Veterinarian, taught me how to take care of my pets when I was three years old, and I always trained and took care of all my own pets.
Now, when I was a little kid myself, I paddled their little bottoms. Since I grew up and learned better, I use time out.
Whehn they misbehave, and commit a real crime, like fighting with each other, or chewing up something when they know better, I chew their little butts out and tell them they have to go to time out.
Then I put them in the small bathroom for a half hour, and no toys, not nothing but a bathmat to lie on and contemplate their sins, and hear everything they are missing out on.
It really works.
You can clean that crate so your puppy can't smell the other dog.
I use Simple Solution. I get it at Petsmart, but most pet stores carry it, and probably Walmart does.
It is great for renmoving pet stains and other stains, and pet odors.
You can clean until you can no longer smell anything but the shampoo, but the cats and dogs can still smell their odor, and will use that place again.
Simple Solution kills the odor so they can't smell it.
So if you wash the crate with Simple Solution, your puppy won't smell the other dog.
Also, lots of dogs puppies would go into the crate BECAUSE of the other dog's odor.
Some of them might not fel so alone if they smelled another dog.
As for writing more.
Write anytime you think I can help.
I am glad to help in any way I can, and I am retired, so this is about all I do.LOL
