Question
Hi there.  My husband and I just rescued a Jack Russell boy puppy from a shelter.  We wanted a playmate for our other Jack Russell girl, Taco.  We have had her for 8 years now and she has been our pride and joy.  The new puppy, Tater, is about 3 years old (also fixed) and is a wonderful dog.  He is such a loving puppy and is learning his new tricks really fast.  He knows sit, stay, speak, and even come... and we are still working with him everyday, but one issue that is the REAL problem is he loves to run away from us.  If he notices that there is a chance he can get free, he runs and doesn't stop running.  He always tries to find ways to escape from the yard, and we don't know why he loves to do this so much when we take him for walks everyday.  We try to locate him with our vehicle and even call him and hold out a treat for him and he darts right past us and doesn't even acknowledges us.  He knows he has a great home, and he is a perfect dog when he doesn't run.  When he's free and running, it's like he is a different dog.  It's really frustrating because he has done this a lot lately and around traffic too and we don't know what to do.  We have tried not to discipline him when we get him, but that doesn't seem to matter to him. My husband and I have thought about getting a shock collar fence system, but will something like that work when he takes off?  Is there any recommendations for this?  We love him and don't want to give him back to the shelter...please help us!

Answer
Shock collar fences do often stop them, but some dogs will still bolt through them, while others won't,most won't so it won't hurt to try it

Another thing you can do is have a long tie out/chain that is as long as your yard,so he can still enjoy the yard, without worrying about running away

Also taking him to obedience classes will help,as a trainer can also show you how to keep him close, and it will also keep him busy
