possible parvo exposure

Question
"We had a thanksgiving guest show up with their 3 dogs yesterday. They explained that they are feeling extra "attached" because less than 2 weeks ago they lost a dog to parvo. OMG! One of the dogs they brought wasn't vaccinated until after they lost the other- this dog was not showing any symptoms and was very playful appearing healthy. We have 2 dogs and one of them isnt vaccinated. What should we do? Its the weekend and we can't contact our local vet."

Answer
Read http://www.avma.org/communications/brochures/canine_parvo/parvo_brochure.asp and http://www.heirlair.com/parvo.htm

I think the incubation period of parvo is 8 days.  So if the dogs were exposed over 2 weeks before, they shouldn't be carrying it.  Also a young puppy will have immunity from its mother perhaps protecting both their unvaccinated dog and yours.  Vaccinating your dog now won't help, it takes 2 weeks to develop immunity.  I don't know there is much to do except hope for the best and be ready to act at the first sign of problems the end of this week.  I would call your vet, maybe not Monday when they will be swamped after the long weekend, but later in the week.  See what they say, and find out how to get help outside regular office hours.
