Hair loss on a Basset Hound

My Basset is 8 years old.  He has large areas on his back where the hair has completely fallen out.  He did this a few months back and the vet gave us many antibiotics and a special shampoo which seemed to work.  Why is he getting this problem again and is there any other way to help him without costing me hundreds of dollars?

Hi Alicia.  Sounds like he may have some sort of bacterial infection or fungus around his hair follicles. What antibiotic & shampoo was he on? Sounds like he may need something a little different. Maybe more of a broad spectrum antibiotic. Please answer these 2 questions & this will help me answer your better. Thanks
