Salivary Gland Removal

Question
Hi,,My dog just had this procedure done 3 days ago.
(Salivary Gland Removed)  He is doing fine however it appears that it is still a little lumpy at the incision sight.  The surgical tech advised that this will go down over time.  Can you please let me know if you somewhat agree with them?  I am concerned because I expected to not see anything there other than the incision.  He also appears to have a bit of loose skin where the lump was, could the skin have stretched?  Any input would be appreciated....By the way where do you reside?  $350 for the procedure is a "bargain" compared to where I live...I got rates as high as $2500.00-$2800.00.

Answer
Hi Samantha,

Your vet tech is correct, your dog's wound site will calm down over time, though it is possible that your dog's skin might not look the same as it did prior to surgery. Every dog heals differently. The excess skin should tighten up, at least a little. Really though, it's just cosmetic.

The incision should be checked daily for signs of infection, don't delay in contacting your vet if you think it doesn't look right, or if it looks like a pocket of fluid is accumulating beneath the incision site.

I can't speak of the cost of the procedure. Prices vary from vet office to vet office, and by region of the country.

Best of luck,

Patti
