A heat cycle can last from 2-3 weeks, to as long as 6-7 weeks, depending on the dog. The solution to having to figure out when the risk of pregnancy is over is to have her spayed. If you are not participating in dog shows with her, that is the responsible thing to do, because if a dog is not being shown and/or participating in breed-appropriate working trials, it should not be bred. And if the dog is not going to be bred, the responsible thing to do is to have it spayed or neutered. This also reduces and eliminates the chances of the dog developing certain reproductive system diseases, so it makes for a healthier dog.
