Chihuahua favoring her paw

Question
My dog has been favoring her front left paw for about a week now.  She jumps around a lot and I figured she might have broken it so we took her to the vet yesterday.  The vet x-rayed it and there are no breaks or hairline fractures.  The vet said she is favoring one of the toes so she splinted it and put a cone on her so she wouldnt gnaw on it.  I wonder if there is something jammed in the paw?  They looked and didn't see anything. The paw isnt swollen or bleeded she just hobbles toward that one paw.  The vet said she has to wear the cast for 3 weeks.  She sleeps in the bed with us and with that cone and the cast she has I was kept up all night with her having to adjust.  Is the splint really necessary for 3 whole weeks?  Any thing I should do to help her be comfortable?

Answer
Hi Chris :-)

Unfortunately the split/cast is necessary for the next 3 weeks hun. This is so her paw can heal and any injury to the area can also heal and so she stops biting it and putting weight on it.

The only thing you can really do is keep her paw elevated and when she is asleep at night, put a small cushion underneath her paw so it is elevated.

Keep a eye on her paw for any sores forming or if she is in any pain, take her back to your Vet for some pain medication.

The cone will need to stay on your Dog for as long as the Vet advised. But it may be possible to take the cone off her, once her paw is healing (9-14 days) but there is still the possibility your Dog may chew the splint and do more damage to her Foot.

Its unlikely there is anything jammed in her paw because the Vet would of noticed and if it was solid, the Xray would of picked this up hun.

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
