Question
I have 2 mini dacshunds . Although they are family pets , our female is in heat and we decided to see if they will mate. Puppies would have plenty of love and room in our house. My male is definitely trying to mate with her. They just aren't " connecting" . In your experience , is it possible that a female will not let the male mate with her???

Answer
Hi Allison,

You didn't say how old your female dog is. A female should not be bred until she's 2 years old. Just like teenage human who might have become pregnant, dog isn't mature enough to be bred when it's too young, even though they're physically able to get pregnant.

Most dogs will have a fertile period can last about five days and may begin approximately nine to ten days after the onset of heat. However, onset of fertile period can vary after the start of the heat cycle. Some females will only accept a male during this fertile period though others females may allow a male to mount at any time during her cycle while others are not receptive at all. Fertile periods can vary dog to dog.

No doubt about it, a litter of puppies is adorable, but beside the cutness factor, you should consider the cost that a litter. Please read this web page entitled "So you want to have a litter of puppies":
