When to train a new dog?

Question
Hello, My wife and I rescued a Border Collie mix the middle of this week.  The dog had been at the shelter for 6 months and is only 11 months old.  He has taken to our house and our other two dogs well.  He is picking up on potty training and is is calm and happy in his crate.  He is a shy dog and not used to being around people.  When can we start obdeince training with him?  Also, does he need to be more comfortable with my wife and myself before we use a prong collar to keep him from pulling on his leash so hard?

Answer
It's always best to wait about 2 weeks before taking them to oebience classes to get used to you, your house and routine-after that you can take him to classes which is excellent that you are doing so,in fact most of the questions i deal with stem from owners not taking the dog to obedience classes,so it is good to take him, just give him two weeks to settle in

Now as for using the prong collar you can start that right away,as it is good to start your own work/training on him, even as soon as you get a dog-so yes you can use one now,and it'll make things a bit easier
