(Im sorry if you consider this medical) Golden Retriever Acting Strange

My dog is 10 years old. He has just started doing this, mostly at night. He paces around, and then he'll stop and look (like he see's something but theres nothing there) and then back up and his head twitches (vigorously), like someone's going to hit him or something. I don't know what it is. After this, it seems that he scares himself and he trys to hide under tables and bangs around in the middle of the night.
