Question
We have a chocolate 6 month old labrador. For a puppy he seems unusually quiet, never really bothers with people when they come to the house and spends a lot of time sleeping. However once he's with other dogs he behaves like any other normal puppy. Is his behaviour at home normal ?

Answer
Dear Lesley,

Thank you for writing to me about your Lab puppy who is calm and well behaved.  I say, count your blessings!!!  As long as he is playful with other dogs, and has a healthy appetite, I wouldn't worry too much.  However, just to be sure, I suggest that he be examined by your vet and have some blood drawn for a general profile.  I would pay special attention to the thyroid to make sure it is at center of normal.

Additionally, vaccinations can make a dog have bad reactions.  Try to remember if this lack of energy began during the time he was receiving vaccinations.  If so, he may be suffering from vaccinosis and therefore I would not recommend any additionaly vaccinations, except a 3 year rabies and only under the supervision of a homeopathic vet who can administer a remedy to counteract the reaction to the vaccine.  This type of vet can also give your dog what is called Nosodes in place of vaccinations and check his titers over time.  This is the safe way to go.

You may have the workings of a therapy dog in this puppy if he is normally as calm as you describe.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
