-----Question-----
i have a 4 year old chihuahua who gave birth on newyeras day to 4 puppies. this is here 4th litter and she has been in excellent health and perfect puppies on previous 3 litters. she thrw up all aferbirth(what a mess) and is barely eating or drinking. puppies seem to be ok, but i do not want her to dehydrate or......  any advice??
-----Answer-----
Donna,
Oh, I bet those puppies are just adorable!!
Since she is feeding four puppies, she should have an appetite.  Does she have any kind of discharge that is black or green?  I'm asking because sometimes there can be another puppy that never delivered.  This could cause a temp rise in your dog and a high temp will make them not want to eat.  Actually, not eating is a major sign that something isn't right.  I don't want to scare you, and I'm not saying she has another puppy, I'm just "thinking out loud" as to why she isn't eating or drinking.  Yes, she can dehydrate and if she does, the pups are in danger.  If I were you, just to be on the safe side, I would take her in for a check up. It's better to be safe than sorry.  Even if there is not a puppy stuck, she still could have some type of infection.   I wish you the very best.

God Bless,
Becky

Answer
Donna,
That discharge is normal at first and will linger somewhat. I should have asked if there was a foul odor which would indicate a decaying puppy. (sorry, don't mean to be so graphic).  I think your decision to have her checked is the best thing you can do. You don't want to lose her or any of the pups over this.

God Bless,
Becky
