Question
I have 4 pitbull puppies born on febuary 2 2011. On march 21 2011 they were acciedentally wet. They fell in their water bowl and couldn't stop shaking. So I quickly dried them off. At around 4am I woke up and decided to check on them. It was about 60 degrees outside, but they seemed okay. Could they be sick or suffering?

Answer
Hi Kerene,

At about 6 weeks old, your puppies should be physically mature to be okay if they were to briefly get chilled. Only very young puppies (under 3 weeks old) can't regulate their body temperature. After 5 weeks of age puppies can be kept at normal room temperature. Sixty degrees is a little on the chilly side, but it's not freezing. If your pups are being kept outside, make sure they have shelter, and warm bedding - which should be raised off the ground (such as a platform) or insulated from the cold.

If your puppies are still shivering, are acting listless or lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then you should have a vet examine them. But it sounds like they weren't cold enough, for a long enough period of time to have suffered any ill effects.

I hope I've been a help.

Best of luck,

Patti
