Shih-poo housetraining problems

Question
Hi, I hope you can offer me some help. We have a 2 year old Shih-poo, and she is a wonderful, sweet little dog and a delight to have around. However, she has always had housetraining problems (I've read that this is just a natural problem with the breed). We purchased a crate a few months ago and have been crate training her and it's helped a lot, but she still does not give us any signals when she needs to go potty. We take her out first thing in the morning and she usually pees outside, but if left alone inside she will also pee and poo just as easily. She seems to prefer certain spots on the carpet, and we've tried shampooing the carpet to remove the odor but she still prefers those spots. We are expecting our second child and would really like to nip this problem in the bud before the baby arrives, because I think she is going to act up when that day comes since my husband and I and our son have all spoiled her and she is definitely the baby of the house. So I'd like to get this housetraining issue out of the way now but I can't figure out how to get her to let us know when she needs to go. When we take her outside we say "go potty" so she gets used to the phrase, and if she goes she gets a treat, if she doesn't go then we put her back in the crate; but even when she goes and we leave her out of her crate, she will just turn around and go potty inside as well. It's like it makes no difference to her whether she goes inside or out. She would much rather run laps in the yard and play while she is outside than go potty. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much in advance, and I apologize for this being such a long question.

Answer
Hello Beth Ann;
She is going to need a "Crate" training system!
This is going to be tougher since she is 2 years old!
But, it can be done.
I would work with the smallest one you can find, and then pick her up and carry her out to the area to potty.
This is the way to start, and "Praise" her when she "goes Potty"!
This is the way to start with positive reinforcement.
Right now, she has to stay in the crate while in the house, or you will have to be with her with a leash to stop having the accidents in the house!
Let me know how you do, as this will take time to work her into her new schedule!
Thank you for your question.
And I will be available for more questions if need be.
Best luck,
Melissa
