Question
QUESTION: We need to give our goldie poo benedryl to get his allergic itchng controlled.  We have heard it is .5-2mg per pound, and also that for dogs over 50lbs- it is 50mg dosage.  Should we be following the per poundage or theover 50 lbs approach.  Our Guinness is 130lbs.

ANSWER: Hi -  Canine dosage for Benadryl is 1-2 mg per pound.  YOUR Guinness could have at least 50 mg every 12 hrs.  ( MOST Vets will offer this amount)

I would love to hear more about the Itchy problem with Guinness?
Has the VET treated your dog yet?
Can you give me more info?  I may be able to help.

Lowchensaustralia and Vetmedicine refer to the 1-2 mg per pound

QUESTION: still not sure if I can give 1mg/lb.  It was advised to give 50 mg, but that is less than .5mg/lb.  We did go ahead and give him 125mg, based on his weight of 130-140 lbs.  his itching has lessened, and we are in the process of changing his dog food to a holistic, hypoallergenic food.  We are currently investigating different proteins and grains.  Now using Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul (I think that is its name!!) if no change (although anything is better than the pedigree we were giving him, we will look into a lamb and rice food or homemade food and add ingredients until satisfactory results!

Answer
Benadryl;  You can always start low and then add to the dosage.  It's better to give less at first.  They just don't want the dog to be knocked out.  As for food, I would refer you to a Lamb and rice or even a Seafood brand:   Wellness makes a nice Ocean - No grain --- they even have a low fat one.
Yes, anything is better than Pedigree.
It may be environmental allergies and not food related.

Let me know if you need help with adding to his food program?  Give it a good 3-4 weeks before you changed the food again.

BEST wishes.....
