Doxie and labs getting along

Question
I rather foolishly bought a mini-weenie dog on the spur of the moment last night. He is just under 3 months old and my parents own a chocolate lab that is about 15 months. The lab has a lot of energy and the puppy is very curious and playful, for the most part they haven't had a problem when they play but Baylee(lab) thinks Teagan(weenie) is more like a chew toy and bats at him and chases him. And Teagan thinks Baylee's bed and toys are his too and takes things right from Baylee's mouth. I've been watching them and when one whimpers take them away from each other. How do I make this more natural for both of them.

Answer
Hello, Just keep an eye on them at all times until the puppy is settled in...I had the same sort of issues with my labrador retreiver when I brought home my jack russell terrier puppy she would Pick him up! once I wentt into another room for 2 minutes and came back.... I caught her hanging him over the edge of the bed by his sweater! LOL. No worries he was never hurt by her with jack russells or even mini dacshunds they are tough little dogs and can stand up to some rough play...but since its a fairly small dog that can easily have its back broken you have to watch them carefully if the lab is laying too roughly seperate them for a few minutes as a time out. Make sure they have the same toys...each a ball/tug toy/nyla bone or whatever or have three or more of each toy as dogs always want what the other dog is playing with. Makre sure to feed the dogs in seperate areas at feeding times and you can not leave food down all the time or the puppy will eat adult dog food and the lab will eat puppy food and get fat! Give the lab a big bed to lay in as well more often then not big dogs are deprived of beds or bedding...my own lab loves to lay in her pillow style bed. Also any rawhides or other edable chews should Never be given when the dogs are together..if the puppy steals the big dogs there could be blood shed and its easy to guess who looses. Also small dogs like yours tend to be somewhat scrapy and can irratate the lab enough to make him attack him...I know from experianceas my jack russell terriers pisses off my lab quite often but never enough to cause Real fights but even play fights with big and tiny dogs can have terrible results. Basicly just watch them, crate your puppy when your not home so he doesnt get into truble and if you follow some of the rules I've pointed out you should be fine.
