UTI

Question
My female boxer just recently started urinating in the house uncontrollable.  I believe (not sure) that she also urinates without knowing while she is sleeping.  I'm wondering if she may have a UTI infection.  She urinates frequently with very little volume.  Her appetite is fine and her water intake is the same.  I also have a male boxer and he does not urinate in the house, that is why I question this may be an infection.  I have an appointment next week with my vet, but I would like to know if these are the type of symptoms that coincide with a UTI. Thank you for your time.  Melissa.

Answer
Melissa,

A Urinary Tract Infection is a strong possibility here, along with a bladder or kidney infection. Some of the symptoms of UTI's include frequent urination, blood in the urine, straining to urinate, inappropriate urination (in the house, etc.) incontinence (like your dog urinating in her sleep), a strong odor to the urine, increased water consumption, and dribbling urine. UTI's are more common in female dogs than in male dogs. There are other things this could be though, and your veterinarian will be able to make a precise diagnosis after testing her urine and possibly her blood, depending on what the specific gravity test on the urine shows. Have you explained what is going on to the receptionist at your clinic? I would prefer if your dog was seen before next week, as this is uncomfortable for her. You might ask to speak to the doctor and see if he/she can see you sooner, or find a veterinary clinic that can. It's not an emergency, but I wouldn't want my dog to have to go through another week of that.

Good luck!
