Feeding my German Shepherd

Question
Hello,  I have a beautiful german shepherd we got as a puppy from 7 1/2 weeks. He is now almost 7 months old.  We are feeding him twice a day, in the morning and supper.  When do we start to feed him just once a day? and should it be in the morning or evening?

Answer
Hi Trianda;
I think it is after they turn one year old. At least that long.
I always feed twice a day, half in the morning and the other half in the evening, around the time we eat our dinner. that gives them time to digest their food and take care of their business.
They don't go to bed on an empty stomach.
I think when they are fed twice a day, there is less tendency to bolt their food or overeat (if it is offered).
My dogs seem to maintain their weight better with this.
also, as they get older( senior dogs, they are more slowed down and rest more and exercise less, so one feeding may not keep them from being hungry, as they very often won't eat their daily ration all at the same time.
A 24 hour fast everyday seems to me would cause more likely the problems of constipation etc.
But feed twice a day at least until they are a year old.
I feed 4 times a day until they are 3 months old, 3 times till they are about 8 to 10 months old, and twice a day from them on, with their dog treat in between.
