QuestionMy dog is sixteen years old and she is sick wont eat much or hardly drink water . Two days now. Is not acting her usual self. Could it be a digestive problem. My husband is always feeding her human food. She stays under the bed a lot. Still unsing bathroom. Is there any food I can offer her. She loves crisp bacon drained very well. Would that be okay?
AnswerHi Janice,
Anything you can use to tempt your dog to eat, is fine, including a little bacon. You also might try soy milk with a chopped up hard boiled egg in it.
Not drinking is actually more of a concern than not eating though. A dog, especially an elderly dog, can become dehydrated easily, and that's a slippery slope to organ failure.
If your dog hasn't eaten anything or drank anything in two days, and not acting like herself besides, you should take that as a cue that something is wrong. You need to take your dog to the vet without delay. She may require subcutaneous fluids.
Best of luck,
Patti
