Old dog hates puppy

Question
My mother got a Bichon puppy for Christmas.  My poodle (M.J.) is 7 years old and we visit my mother every Sunday.  My poodle hates the new puppy.  She is scared to death when the puppy runs up to her and runs for higher ground. M.J. just turns her head away from the puppy and wants nothing to do with her.  M.J. will play when she knows the puppy is off the floor and will not bother her.  How can I get these two to get along?  My mother watches my dog when I go out of town a couple of times of year, but she can't deal with the two of them like this.  Please help!!

Answer
Hi Cheryl;
It is normal for a dog that has been the only one in the house, to get a little jealous of a newcomer.
They think they are being replaced.
The new baby gets all the attention, and everything it does is soooo cute, and the little green eyed monster rears it's head.
The same thing happens in a family when a new baby comes home from the hospital and the older child is sort of ignored for awhile.
Raising dogs is the same as raising kids, they just don't verbalize like humans do. That is about the only difference I have ever foun between raising two legged and 4 legged children.
Try to include the older dog in with the new one, like it is the older dog's pet too.
Try picking up Mj and cuddling her and saying  something like, "Look ( new puppy;s name), this is MY baby". and make a fuss over MJ.
At 7, M.J. also may not be in much of a mood to put up with a playful puppy. they can be a handful to an older less active dog.
Maybe M.J. feels she is a grownup, and doesn't care to romp and have her ears chewed by the little interloper.
Try to think of it like you have brought a new baby brother home to a 3 or 4 year old that has been the center of attention all his life, and treat M.J. like you would reassure a human child that their place is still secure.
And, don't let the puppy play rough with M.J. till SHE decides to play with it.
Make her know she still has special rights and a special place.
