Dogs barking!

Question
Hi, we have 2 dogs, one is 'Bear', a 10 yr old male Border Collie x Kelpie who lives outside, just wandering around our property and the other one is 'Cooper', a 6 year old male Maltese x Shih Tzu who is inside and someimes outside on our timber decking at the front of our house.
The problem is, no one can come to our house, or even down our driveway without the dogs setting each other off and barking like mad. No one makes it to the door because I have to go outside to make Bear be quiet.  And then even when Bear has stopped barking, Cooper still continues to bark until our visitors are well inside the door.  What can we do to stop the dogs barking like this without using a spray or muzzles?  The other thing is, I like the fact that strangers/intruders would be barked at if they tried to get into our house, but just not every one that comes to visit!

Answer
Unfortunately, Melanie, your dogs do not know whether someone coming down the driveway is a friend or stranger. Therefore, it's not possible to teach them to only bark at strangers' vehicles. The dogs are just doing what they're supposed to be doing. The only way I know of to keep them from barking at people is to use some sort of anti-bark device, but as you said, that would keep them from barking at strangers, too.

Bear's barking you have a handle on it sounds, but Cooper is the one with the problem. Once you let someone into your home, he should not continue to bark at them. I would put him in his crate if he continued barking after your guest comes into the house, until he settled down.
