Male pug dominance

Question
I have 3-1/2 year old male pug. He has a great personality, although this dog is BY FAR the most dominant animal I have EVER known (having had dogs my whole life). I do the things I am supposed to with that behavior, like making him sit and wait before feeding him or giving him a snack, making him let me go down the stairs first, etc. It drives him crazy, but he does it. He is extremely smart and house-broken. However, he WILL mark his territory constantly. I definitely do NOT believe this is a house-breaking problem or a UTI, but rather, a dominance thing. We have a very old dog (male) and I have seen the pug pee on him, pee in his dish, and tonight the pug peed on his own crate which was next to the other dog's dish. It's driving me nuts. I find myself in a battle of wills with my dog, which isn't helpful. But take my word - he is smart and knows what he is doing, and I think understands why I get mad. How do you work around this need for marking dominance? Poor guy is very confined in the house, which I don't like either, but he will mark right in front of me sometimes even. Help?? Thanks.

Answer
Hello. unofrutnately this could be more then just a dominance issue. Normally we tell people to neuter their male dogs before the age of 1 to be sure this will not happen, although there are a few dogs that still have the problem. You are going to need to hire a behaviorist to help you with this dog in your home. They will probably tell you that there is NO guarantee that this can be fixed at all. Two dogs of the same sex will often have problems. HOwever, there is a possiblity that with the right training, the dog will see that he is not the dominant one, but that you are. Good luck
