Question
My husband and I have an 11 lb Shiz Tu. We live in a cond with two flights of stairs. I think he should carry her up and down, he wants her to climb. I thought this was a problem with disc and back injury. Who is right? She does not have any physical problems.

Answer
Hi Olivia,

Thank you for writing to me about your precious dog.

If your dog has had a serious disc and back injury it might exaccerbate the condition to be climbing steps, but the ultimate decision lies with your vet.  He is the expert who has personally examined your dog and would know what is and isn't allowed.

If your dog shows any signs of distress when climbing steps, then you don't need an expert to tell you what to do, but if she is bouncing up the steps like nothing is wrong, then I would advise that you still consult with your vet about the type of exercise that is allowed.

The problem is that if the situation is exaccerbated, your dog and your wallet could run into serious difficulties down the road.

I hope your little dog is doing well and I wish you all the best.

Regards,
Shelley Davis
