Female Marking Bed

Question
We have a 2 yr. old female dog who has been fixed and a few days ago we brought home a 7 week old male puppy. They get along really well but last night I realized the female had sprayed on our bed. This has happened in the past when another dog has come into the house, this is the 3rd time in a yr and a half. She has always slept in bed with me in the past but I am wondering if this is the problem. How do I stop this?

Answer
She is marking to reinforce her dominance in the (changing) pack. I had a male do this in my bed, and he got his butt thrown downstairs and into a crate. Sleeping in your bed is a privilege, not a right, and it is a privilege that must be earned.

Put her into a crate at night, and keep your bedroom door closed or put up a baby gate to keep her out of there during the day.

Some on-going obedience classes wouldn't hurt, and start practicing "Nothing in Life is Free" with her (and the puppy) to reinforce who is Alpha in the family; this must be practiced by all the family members. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm
