Question
My Belgian Malinois Shephard Milana is having trouble peeing. She just tinkles a little. Even continuosly tries to go and just cant. This just started 2 days ago. Could you tell me what could be causing this?

Answer
Hi Janice,

Thank you for writing to me about yuor Belgian Malinois.

It would be my guess that your dog has a bladder infection but she really needs to be seen by a vet.

Until then, you can give her some cranberry pills from the health food store and some vitamin C.  The bacteria in the urine that causes inflammation tends to increase the urine's alkalinity.  The acidity in the Vit C brings the pH factor back into the proper acid range, thus killing hte bacteria. Try 1000 mg, 3x a day, crushed in with her food.

There is also a homeopathic remedy call Cantharis.  9C or 12C would be a good place to start.  Place 3 pellets in a dish on a paper towel.  Cover the pills with another paper towel and with a spoon, crush the pellets.  Take your index finger and wet it with your dog's saliva.  Then press it into the crushed Cantharis and run it along your dogs gums where the gum meets the lip so that the Cantharis can slowly dissolve in her mouth.  Do this 3x a day.

Your dog should be fed pure lean protein during this time with some veggies.  Grains, which the body perceives as sugar (unless you are feeding a whole grain and even then it should be very limited)should not be used.  No sugar of any kind should be given to your dog.

Encourage your dog to drink a lot by adding some pure chicken broth (no salt or chemicals) to the water.  Change frequently as bacteria will grow in the broth when left out.

Additionally, you can add yogurt and/or a probiotic to her diet.

I have cured bladder infections using this protocol.

If you don't see improvement within 24-36 hrs., please take your dog to her vet.

Good luck.
