Howling dog

Question
My dog howls everytime I leave my apartment.  How can I get him to understand this is wrong.  He doesn't tear up the house while I am gone, but I'm afraid his howling will get on my neighbors' nerves.

He is a Pugg/Chihuahua mix that is about 4 years old.  When we are together, he never wants to leave my lap.

Any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Answer
How long are you gone when you leave. Becuase obviously he is very attached to you. So when you leave he howls to try and find you. He's trying to tell you that you leaving HIM behind is wrong(in his mind). If you work at an office see if you can take him along. As you mentioned he never leaves your lap. See if you could work something out in that respect as he is very small. If not than give him something to do all day. Turn on the radio or/and t.v., give him a peanut butter(cheez whiz, ect.)filled bone just before you leave and try lots of toys. The ones that record your voice and are activated when he moves it work great with some dogs. Don't forget the cube. You stuff food or hard treats inside and when he rolls it treats fall out. This should be good for you if you don't have alot of time to train. Write me back and let me know what you think. If this doesn't work let me know and I'll see if I can help you. Sending lots of happy tail wags your way. Hope to hear from you soon.
