Sudden Paralysis

Question
My golden retriever had a litter of purebred puppies. We have two left. One is absolutely healthy, but the other started walking funny, the next day she would be walking and then all of a sudden fall down and drag her back legs, and the next day she was not able to stand up at all. I took her to the vet right away. We did bloodwork and X-rays and nothing showed up. So I scheduled an appointment with a central nervous system specialist for Monday. But now today she won't eat or drink. She doesn't have any reaction to pain anywhere on her body- it used to be that when we clamped her toes with something she would both pull her legs back and look at us. Which let us know both her sensory and motor nerves were still working. Now absolutely nothing. not anywhere in her body.
I was just wondering if you would have any clue what might cause this.
Her temp is normal- 102. degrees. Her heart rate is a little slow- 90-99. And her respirations are very high- about 63 per minute. and very shallow. Nobody seems to know whats wrong with her. Any advice you might have would be of great help.

THank you very much
Chelsea

Answer
Chelsea,
If she's not eating or drinking she needs to be hospitalized and on fluids as soon as possible.  She could die very quickly without it.

The paralysis can be caused by a tick, have you checked her entire body for fleas/ticks?

You've done a commendable job in trying to find out what's wrong, but I have to say I don't know what to tell you.  If the pup is in pain or doesn't have a good quality of life, I think you should think about letting her go.

If I were in your situation it would be very hard, especially since it's just a baby but even though it's hard for you, it's harder to live like that for the pup.

I'm so very sorry,

Laura
