Prong Collar & Aggressive Behavior Towards Husband

Question
Hi Kristin,

I have two questions. My husband and I adopted a rescue dog about 5 weeks ago. Brax is almost 2 and a mix of yorkie/lakeland terrier weighing 16 pounds. He loves to pull/lunge/chase people, dogs, and squirrels when on a leash, so I purchased a prong collar last week. It fits snugly in the right spot just below the ears; however, during our walk it does slide gradually. If I try to remove another prong, it is too small to be put on him. I don't want to injure him by it sliding down, and I can tell it is less effective as it slides down. Is it safe for him? It does only have 3 prongs on it.

Brax has also started barking and growling at my husband over the past two weeks. First we thought he was protective of me, but he will do so even if I'm not in the room. It usually happens after my husband has left a room in the house and then is returning to the room Brax is in. How should we teach him to behave differently?

Thanks so much!

Melissa

Answer
I think you can try to remove one of the prongs,if it just fits, then it should be ok if you can get it on him without too much of a struggle

Now as for the way he is acting towords your husband, what you do is have your husband randomly give him small treats,so he will see him as a friend, rather than an enemy.also something that will help will be to have both you and your husband attend dog obedience classes together-that will often tighten the bond and make the dog less fearful. This could be a dog that isn't used to men.
