Question
I am building a step stool for my Golden Retriever to get in and out of the car.  I am planning on painting it white but would like to know what kind of a black pattern that I should put on it so that she can see it easier when she tries to get out of the car. I was considering stripes but then thought random blotches of paint might be better for her to judge distance to the stool when she is getting out so she doesn't misjudge and fall.  Any suggestions?  She is 13.5 years old and has hip problems, the reason for the step stool.

Answer

Hi Rick,

It's great you're able to make something to help your elderly dog get in and out of your car, but probably even better than a step stool, would be a ramp. With a ramp, your dog wouldn't have to judge where the next step might be, and risk missing it. If it helps in making your ramp, you can see a variety of dog ramps here:

More important than color, would be traction. You can mix silica sand into the paint (the same kind used in porch floor or steps for traction) or use carpet, self-stick traction strips or a ribbed traction mat.

Best of luck,
