Hi Sarah,  Canine Distemper is an airborne virus that is transmitted via the air as well as via contact with others that have had it or items contaminated animals have had contact with.  It is like a cold, except it affects the neurological system.  Once an animals gets distemper, the most humane thing is to put them to sleep because it messes up the neurological system in their brain and they will never be the same again.  Hope this helps,
