Can our male Husky be near pups??

Question
QUESTION: Our 1 1/2 yr old female Husky will be having pups soon and we have a 4 1/2 yr old male (the daddy) with us also. Do we have to keep him away from the pups at first...
Thank you in advance "Deb"

ANSWER: Yes, you do. He *may* be okay around the puppies (or he may not), but the bitch will be extremely protective of her puppies and will try to attack him if he gets anywhere near them. It would be very easy for her to hurt one of the puppies accidentally when she is doing that.

Also some bitches can get so stressed out after the puppies are born that they kill the puppies. I keep mine in a pen in the kitchen, and a sheet is around the pen for privacy. Other dogs are not allowed in the kitchen the first couple weeks, and I do not allow visitors for a few weeks.

QUESTION: Which brings another question, "about how long do we keep the puppies in and from others (dogs or humans)
Thank you again,
Deb

Answer
After a few days, I will take a puppy out and hold it and let some of the other dogs sniff it as I watch carefully, but I have discovered that there is always a dog or two (usually male) that try to nip at it. Some of the bitches want to "mother" it and clean it. It all depends on the individual dog. I don't let the puppies loose outside with the general herd here until they are around three months old.

The puppies DO need to be held several times a day and socialized with people from Day One, but I don't allow visitors (that I don't know) in until after the puppies have had their first inoculations at eight or nine weeks. Some potential buyers like to pick a specific day and visit multiple breeders, and there is a chance of them bringing in germs from somewhere else.

I do start housebreaking my puppies at five weeks of age, weather permitting, but I do not take them off the property until after they have had their first shots.
