Question
hi could you advise me on a problem that has occourd on our dogs please ,we have three  chuahuahuas, and they are aged 6,  4, and 2.  this last month they have all started to scratch the area above their bottom above tail, they now have baldness and they wont stop trying to bite the area. i have bathed them all in flea shampoo, but it seems to have no affect . i have seen an advert on line for a remedy called tea tree oil mist , could you advise on problem and would this treatment have any effect. the dogs are mainly, fed on fresh chicken and some fibre biscuits could it also be diet related, thankyou  graham horrocks

Answer
Hi Graham :-)

This sounds like it is most likely Flea related hun. I wouldn't recommend Tea Tree Oil mist for Fleas because I have no experience with this product and I wouldn't like to say either way if it is any good.

But I do know of a very good product that not only kills Fleas and their eggs, but also Ticks and Mites. This product will also prevent your Dogs from contracting Scabies if they should come into contact with another Dog who is a host or carrying this infection.

The product I am talking about it called Frontline Combo. It is very good and usually comes in a 3 month, 6 month or 9 month package and you can also purchase a 12 month package if you wish. You apply one sachet to a area on your Dog that they can not reach - usually between the shoulder blades and it begins working straight away. Within 24 hours all Fleas will be dead and their eggs within 48 hours (usually less). You will then need to re-apply to Frontline on the same day next month and so on. This will give them all around protection against Fleas, Ticks and Mites.

But once you apply Frontline you can not wash your Dogs for 7 days because this lowers down the preventative and protective fluid and may wash the Frontline off completely. You can purchase this from your Vet.

For the patches of fur and irritation, I recommend you purchase some Daktacort Cream from your Pharmacist and apply this twice a day to the affected area. This will fight all infection, bacteria and yeast infections and also heal the skin. Apply this for 14 days and you will notice a improvement. If possible, also try to stop your Dogs from biting the affected area. Hopefully the smell of the Cream will stop them from doing this. :-)

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
