Question
My husky has been limping and he has an opened wound between his toe at the top and his foot is swollen , when i squeeze on it blood and puss comes out, what should i do for him

Answer
Dear Tammy,

Thank you for writing to me about your beautiful Husky.

Until you can get him to the vet, soak his foot in very warm (test it on your arm so it doesn't burn him)salt water.  Even epson salt would be good or sea salt and table salt as a last choice.  You want to draw out the infection.  Keep doing this until you see that pus is no longer oozing.

After the soaking, you can put some hydrogen peroxide on which will fizzle.  That means it's drawing out the infection as well.

Then apply an antibiotic cream and bandage with sterile bandages and wrap with gauze and then medical tape.  Don't make it too tight or you could stop the circulation and this is very dangerous.

If this infection has travelled into the blood stream it can be very serious and your dog would need to be put on antibiotics rather quickly.

Be sure to contact your vet regarding this situation.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
