Question
My 11 week old puppy was diagnosed with Bronchitis. The vet gave
antibiotics and a pill for coughing. the pills dont work she coughs all night.
What healthy alternatives can I use besides going back to the vet?

Answer
Hi Candace,

First of all, you should contact your vet and tell him or her that the cough medication isn't working. There are several different cough suppressants for dogs, and depending on the individual, one can work better than the other.

Placing a humidifier or vaporizer near where your puppy sleeps can help with the cough. A few drops of peppermint oil a warm water vaporizer will make breathing less labored.
If you use a humidifier or vaporizer you have to keep it very clean, otherwise it spews bacteria, which won't help your puppy.

Using an over the counter cough medicine works for many dogs with Bronchitis. Again, their active ingredients vary, so the first one you try might not work as well as another. Talk to your vet for a brand recommendation, and for the correct dose.

The medication your vet prescribes are the safest for treating Bronchitis, there's always the danger of your puppy developing pneumonia. You really want to clear this up as fast as possible.

Best of luck,
Patti
