Question
Hi I just buy a great dane from a breeder. He will arrive next two weeks. I read a lot before I choose a big breed like dane. Every book says great dane puppy does not need high protein and fat like other breed. So could you give me some advises on the brand of dry dog foods? There are so many california natural, wellness or orijen, all looks the same. I'm very confused.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Most likely the best thing is to stick to what the breeder is feeding to 4 months if it is a dry puppy chow.  Then switch to an adult chow making sure it has less than 1.5% calcium by analysis, not guaranteed minimum.  You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Much of what you read about dog food is based on what sounds good to people, not what provides the nutrition dogs need.  It matter little to the dog what ingredients go into the food.  What is important is the proportions are such that the dog gets more than enough of each essential nutrient.  The common brands have a well proven record that the premium ones lack.  So if it is anything reasonable at all, stick to the breeders food.  If you do make a change, do so slowly over a week or more.
