Question
Hi-

I've had a 1-year old male mini-dachshund for almost a year now, a few days ago we got another 4-month old male mini-dachshund. They've been running around bitting each others ears, wrestling, trying to mount each other and basically rough housing. Is this normal behavior? And also should I let them be mean to one another? Please let me know, I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me. Sincerely, Belen

Answer
Thanks for your question.  This is completely normal.  They are trying to establish who is Alpha male in the household.  Let your older one disapline the younger one not the other way around.  He had been there the longest and has to adjust to this.  However you being a good mother should be able to tell when enough is enough.  Dont let the older one latch on so that the little one is in pain.  Nibbles here and there are ok. Mounting is just a behavior to estalish dominants too.  Im assuming that the older one is mounting the little one more thent he other way around.  Thats just showing him thats he is incharge.  Its perfectly normal dont worry.  Thanks for your question and good luck with the youngster.
