Question
We have a 4 year old female pitbull/lab mix. We got her from the shelter when she was 6 months old.  She is wonderful with my husband and I; very loving and affectionate.  However there have been several occassions where she has lunged at, growled and tried to bite someone in our home.  Thank goodness she never has actually been able to bite someone.  Everything I'm reading on the internet says that we should euthanize her.  Any thoughts?

Answer
Your dog has some serious behavior issues, and she sounds like an accident waiting to happen. It seems to me that you have only two options.... put her down, or do some serious behavior modification (which ultimately might not work anyway). The second will require a LOT of work on your part and could be very expensive... particularly if it doesn't work and she bites someone. You could be sued and you could lose your household insurance.

If you want to try to change her behavior, contact your veterinarian for the name of a qualified animal behaviorist. Get the dog into on-going obedience classes, and start practicing "Nothing in Life is Free" with her. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm
