Question
Hello
I have a 10 month old male basset hound, who 2 days ago got hit by a car and fractured his pelvis. tonight when i carried him outside to the bathroom, his urine was a dark brownish colour; he has been drinking just little water in the last 2 days (maybe 2 bowls). Also he seems to be shaking alot too. is he just in pain, thats why he's shaking?? and should i worry about his urine??

Answer
Hi Danielle,

Your dog's urine might be darker than normal because he hasn't been drinking enough water. Concentrated urine is a darker yellow to amber color.

The shaking might well be a reaction to pain. Your dog need not suffer through the pain of his fractured pelvis. Contact your vet and get prescription pain medication. Tell your vet about the dog's dark urine color, if it's significant the doctor should know.

If you can't get your dog to drink water, try a little warmed up low fat/low sodium chicken broth. Some dogs can be enticed to drink the new flavored water that are on the market or Pedialyte because they like the taste.

Best of luck,
Patti
